Scholars recently had the opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the real world of healthcare during a visit to SST Rehab, a physical therapy clinic. While shadowing professionals and touring the facility, they learned about the daily responsibilities of physical therapists and explored the wide range of treatments offered to patients. The experience gave them a firsthand look at the equipment, patient care, and the importance of physical therapy in recovery.
“We went to a rehab center for Physical Therapy called SST Rehab. It was a great experience to learn what happens in a morning for a physical therapist and we got to see what they do in the morning and how they do with patients. We got to tour the whole place and see how all the equipment works, we also used some of the equipment there and that was fun. He told us a lot about physical therapy like what to do and what not to do and stuff that matters and doesn’t matter. Overall, it was a great experience to learn about everything and to get us a feel of what physical therapy is,” said Zadiel Vientos.
“Going to SST Rehab was a super unique and cool experience, going into the clinic I had thought I knew what Physical Therapy was, but I was blown away when I was informed of all the different kinds of physical therapy, and what physical therapy really is. For a good amount of time while we were there we had good conversation with Mike the Vice president of SST Rehab. One of my favorite parts was when we got to try the “ESTIM” Machine, where it would send electrical pulses into our arms to reduce swelling, pain, and retrain the muscles. Overall me and zadiel had a wonderful experience shadowing Mike at SST Rehab,” said Jeremiah Schilling (12).
The visit to SST Rehab allowed for a deeper understanding of the physical therapy field through hands-on learning and meaningful conversations with staff. By observing treatments, trying equipment, and asking questions, they left with a new appreciation for the work physical therapists do each day. The experience was not only educational but also inspiring as they consider future careers in healthcare.
