Over the past few weeks people all over social media have called for an economic blackout to not make any purchases at any major companies on February 28th. This protest is a product of the continuous rising prices from everyday needs such as gas, food to housing and utilities. By refusing to buy anything for the day, people are protesting the recent actions in the government, CBS news states, “Tesla CEO Elon Musk — the world’s richest person, with a net worth of $398 billion — has been tasked by President Trump to oversee DOGE, in slashing government spending and cutting the federal workforce.”
NPR states, “This movement, spearheaded by The People’s Union USA, a grassroots group, follows the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at several companies, including Target. The boycott coincides with protests against President Donald Trump’s plans to reduce the government workforce and mass firings at federal agencies.”
The group that started this boycott is the People’s Union USA describes themself, “We are not a political party. We are not a protest. We are a movement of people, unionizing to take back control of our economy, government and future of our country.” This organization has promoted the economic blackout on social media for several weeks to resist and expose large corporations. The intention of this protest is to show that the people still have power to hurt large corporations by refusing to buy from them. The movement also says the movement is not about specific billionaires such as Elon Musk or Trump, but rather focuses on “the system as a whole.”
