Did you know you could get a speeding ticket skiing or snowboarding down slopes?
The 2024 senior trip several scholars were given speeding tickets from the ski patrol for going to fast in the slow area.
“Mr. Moore and I had just skied down the mountain and were chatting with the ski patrol about the slow zone in front of us. We asked about how skiers could possibly go slow on such a steep hill. They said that skiers had to do the side to side motion instead of straight down to slow down due to the danger of the steep slope. Right after they told us that, Caleb Moniz sped past them going so fast that he even caught air. The ski patrol raced after him to have a conversation,” said Tim Waisanen, staff.
Moments after the conversation, Lucius Layton also sped down the mountain colliding with Mr. Moore. Luckily, both were alright but Lucius had already received a green warning ticket about his speed. After the ski patrol saw the video of the collision, they said they would use it for their future training video. The slopes were tough for the Florida scholars as Kathryn Del Rio and AJ font earned their way to the clinic. Kathryn, hurt her knee and AJ sprained his elbow. However, the troubles did not end their as a couple of scholars were sick and some even got food poisoning from one of the restaurants in the area.
“I was skiing really really fast and went over some ice on the road which made the skis wobble and tried to fall but landed on my elbow really hard and continued to drag down the mountain. Although I was hurt I was able to see my friends drop everything to help me and even made my trip better,” Said Aj Font.
Prior to the trip many scholars had never seen snow before, and were amazed by the large mountains covered in fluffy snow.
“ I was terrified for my life because of the snow and mountains, and I was in shock at the beauty of Utah. I never truly realized how beautiful Utah was. I remember seeing snow when I was two months old, and I’m so grateful that I got to experience it my senior year, especially with my classmates. On the airplane, I hated the turbulence and it started to shake; this trip had only been my second time on an airplane. I was terrified of the gondola, mountains, and skiing. This was my first time skiing, and I kept falling and falling but after I got help getting back up and tried again and again. I started skiing and I could stop on my own without help. During the other half of the trip, I was more confident in skiing and tubbing once I tried it and got over my fears. I thank God for blessing me and my senior class, which got closer and made memories with people. I made genuine connections with others around me who I never really realized til this trip,” Said Melodie Chavez.
Furthermore, most scholars had never been skiing or snowboarding before, but quickly got the hang of the movements and learned how to do it well enough to move onto the green, blue, or even diamond slopes. On the last day of the trip all the scholars gathered at the campfire with the chaperones to share a spiritual moment and talk about the rest of the year. This was followed by a large snow fight.
