The gym at Westview Baptist Church was filled with cheers, pink shirts, and school spirit on Monday, October 6th, as the Lions volleyball team closed out their final home game of the season with a clean sweep, winning all three sets. Playing against the opposing Gracepointe Academy.
“It was such a fun game, and we played one of our best games ever,” said sophomore Emma Aguero. “It was also our seniors’ last home game, which made it really special. Everyone came out and supported us, and it was a Pink Out, too. It was really hype at the end, the Boom Squad made it so much fun.”
Donavan Downer participated in the student-run “Boom Squad” alongside high schoolers, being the only middle school participant.
“The boom squad is a team of people who get together and support our school,” said Downer, a 7th grader, “It was weird being the only middle schooler to join, but I got into the rhythm of it.”
“It started last final game of last year, as the energy was just sad and down,” said senior Dominic Ardolina, “So, a group of us got together and just started booming, and that started the squad.”
Senior Avery Stepan, one of the team captains, reflected on what the night meant to her as a graduating senior. “I didn’t even think about it being my last home game until it was over,” she said. “I wanted to leave a mark and not just be another player. I wanted to be a leader.” Stepan added that this season has been a massive improvement from last year, saying, “It feels good being undefeated, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come.”
For many players, the win was bittersweet as they said goodbye to the familiar cheers of their home crowd.
“I’m going to miss the support we have at home,” said 7th grader Alayna Lopez. “When we’re away, it’s their crowd cheering for them, but at home, it’s our people.”
The Lions finished their home season strong, with energy, unity, and a perfect three-set victory.
