Last week, the OS Flag Football team had tryouts. Although there are only 20 people on the team, including the practice squad, it was also an exciting event for the school. 11th-grader Ma’Kayla Christian said she was excited to hear about the tryouts and the season starting soon.
“It’s exciting to watch because the boys look like little chickens and the games bring everyone together, and you can really feel the school spirit.”
Tryouts took place on August 22 between 4—6 p.m. on the field. Boys in middle school and high school were eligible to try out, with many returning scholars and newcomers as well.
When trying to build the team, it was a decision between three men: Coach J.R. Brown, Coach Jared Clark and Coach Jerry Willis. The coaches said they looked for not only physical skills, but high character as well.
“I was looking to see if they had grit and determination as well as the physical skills that go along with football, passing, catching, different,” Coach J.R. said.
“I was looking for general athletic ability and work ethic,” Coach Clark said. “Maybe they aren’t as fast or as strong, but if they had the right mindset and looking for threat, that was like the last thing that I measured.”
Coaches said although the drills were tough, they were designed to build a great team. Middle school athletes showed up and pushed through in an attempt to impress the coaches and make the team.
Preston Richmond, a member of last year’s inaugural team, said he was impressed by the kids who tried out.
“Tryouts aren’t just about proving your skills, they’re about proving your heart,” Richmond said. “Talent gets noticed, but effort earns respect.”
The final roster is announced and has 15 boys on it and a team of five for the practice squad. The roster has 10 returning teammates.
